Other characters currently played: N/A

Character name: Kongou
Age: Unknown, though she is physically the age of a young lady around 16-21. However, ‘fleet girls’ like Kongou begin to inherit memories of their past life as an actual battleship slowly over their lives. This means Kongou might have memories from 1913 when the ship was built to 1944 when it was sunk.
Canon: Kantai Collection
Canonpoint: End of Episode 9

Background: Wiki link, though it only shows her canon lines in the game. Actual historical battleship wiki link, since what happened to the ship tends to be mirrored with canon (though this canon takes precedence).

In the anime, which is where I’ll be apping her from, Kongou is the ‘name ship’ of the Kongou-class battleship, which basically means she was the first model of the ship put into service and thus the model was named after her. She has three younger sisters: Hiei, Haruna and Kirishima. In her world, humanity has been driven from the seas by strange beings called ‘Abyssals’, sometimes-humanoid living weapons that formed fleets to destroy any human in sight. Normal weaponry is useless against them. However, as the Abyssals began to appear, several girls began to be born with ‘the spirit of warships’, inheriting the memories and traits of these warships. They were abnormally strong and resilient, able to withstand full-on missile attacks and gunfire. With weapons called ‘outfits’, they donned specially-designed naval weaponry fashioned to fit their form and are sent into sea battle with water floatation devices on their feet. Kongou is one of these girls, inheriting the spirit of the battleship Kongou.

She’s introduced in Episode 1 as the flagship (the ship leading the rest of the fleet) in Support Fleet Two, decimating an enemy destroyer with her guns. Someone in her fleet (Hibiki) remarks that ‘the nickname Phoenix isn’t just for show’. Kongou has high explosive power and gets sent into battle frequently, much like her historical counterpart. In Episode 3, she’s out on an expedition with her sisters when they get called in to assist another fleet in trouble, sending long-range Type 3 shells over to the enemy (and earning the temporary admiration of the protagonist, Fubuki).

She’s formally introduced in Episode 4 as Kongou, and gets sent on a mission to secure supplies with her sisters along with Fubuki and Shimakaze. The mission is a success, even though Fubuki breaks down halfway. Kongou stays behind to comfort her, and she eventually finishes off the enemy. In Episode 5, she is re-sorted into Mobile Unit Five with Fubuki, Kaga, Zuikaku, Ooi and Kitakami. This fleet is full of clashing personalities and they argue over who is going to be the flagship, till Kongou suggests they all try it once in practice to see who is the best. After all of them fail spectacularly, it’s Fubuki’s turn to try, but they are suddenly called out to do a sortie (military operation) to protect the main base as the Abyssals send in a few units to attack them. Fubuki takes control of the situation and gives out orders, before dashing in front to make the enemy focus their attacks on her. Kongou saves Fubuki from this situation, before wrapping up the battle and celebrating.

Across the next few episodes, Kongou serves as a supportive character to the main character Fubuki, participating in the same missions as firepower and also helping her through tough times/inferiority complexes. They move to a new naval base at Truk Island, but things go awry when their Admiral, who is in charge of all the fleet girls, goes missing when the original naval base is attacked. At the end of Episode 9, the secretary ship Nagato announces the Admiral's disappearance, and this is when Kongou makes her wish.

Personality:

”You’ve got a lot of energy. But, no one’s got more energy than me!”

A self-proclaimed ‘genki girl’, she seems to fit that stereotype perfectly. She’s energetic, enthusiastic, and runs her mouth without a care. In Episode 4, she’s shown doing a mid-air somersault while screaming her catchphrase ‘Burning Love’ before slamming onto someone in a hug, assuming they are the object of her affections. When they need to find one of their teammates before going on a mission, instead of going the sane way and asking around, she decides to throw a mini-concert to try luring them out instead. Not to even mention how she tries, a bit too excitedly, to get the Admiral's attention.

She leaves a last impression on people with how outgoing she is-- and with that, also comes the stigma of being seen as eccentric. Mutsu reassures Fubuki in Episode 4 that she’ll feel ‘stupid for feeling nervous’ about meeting Kongou, because despite the fact that she’s one of the oldest and most proficient battleships, literally no one is capable of being scared of her with how silly she acts. She doesn’t seem to take anything seriously, even screaming her catchphrase in the middle of battle. They even have a few frames to show Fubuki’s cool impression of Kongou shattering to pieces (literally). During the mission briefing, it’s shown that she isn’t the brightest bulb in the bunch, because she’s unable to understand battle instructions if they’re given in an official manner rather than a straightforward one. When Nagato explains their mission objectives, Kongou (and her sister Hiei) just say ‘What?’ in unison, before Kirishima and Haruna explain that they ‘just need to run up to the enemy really fast and blow them up’, which she does understand.

If being hilarious and outgoing were her only attributes, though, she’d never rise through the ranks as one of the most capable battleships.

”You finally smiled, Bucky.”

While she keeps a lofty air, in reality, she’s perfectly aware of the weight her job carries. They are humanity’s last stand against the Abyssals and their only chance of getting the seas back. And finally, she’s very aware of the constant danger they’re in every time they enter danger, and how much this constant fighting affect the younger girls among them. In the manga, when her bullets fail to hit the enemy planes and they leave her effective range, she’s immediately filled with immense dread for the friends and family she has back at the docks now that she’s failed to stop them on the open seas. She knows that if she fails, the consequences are severe.

Despite her demeanor and the fact that many people don’t take her seriously for her attitude and how she interjects her words with English, when hiccups happen, she’s perfectly capable of taking charge. When a surprise formation of enemy planes are spotted converging on the docks while Kongou is out training, she launches into panic control, giving people specific orders on the fly and rushing down to intercept these planes herself. While she may act easily surprised and gullible, she knows that losing her cool is never going to help. While acting air-headed during Episode 4, she pointedly notes how Fubuki smiles for the first time during the mission, and is at the ready to protect her when the enemy fires at Fubuki. When Fubuki breaks down from the stress, instead of ditching her and quickly dispatching the enemy first, she trusts the enemy to her sisters for a while and stays behind to comfort Fubuki and make sure she's alright.

”It’s okay. I understand.”

She’s a battleship, but also a ‘genki girl’, and she refuses to become only one or the other. Kongou isn’t afraid of being herself, but doesn’t ever want to hurt the people around her by doing so, and willingly becomes serious when she has to. She’s optimistic and cheerful, while being efficient and effective. While she sugarcoats other people’s flaws and continuously tells them they’re not as bad as they think they are, she does so with the ultimate goal of giving them hope and takes the job of making sure they succeed into her own hands.

All in all, her personality, motivations and such can all be summed up in her catchphrase, ‘burning love’. The burning love she has for her friends, her sisters and Kure Naval Base drives her to train harder when she fails to aim well and gives her energy as well as strength. She has compassion to treat others well, and empathizes with the plights of people she’s only just met. While she can be young, naive and not quite sure when to stop at certain times, she will step up to the plate in order to protect everyone she cares about. In the end, her smiles and cheery attitude are all supposed to inspire the same thing in the people around her. And in the end, that same love is what drives her to sell her soul for a wish.

”Hiei… and everyone. I want to protect all of you… that’s what I mean.”

Wish: "I wish that I have the power to keep everyone safe and happy all their lives! Everyone, from my sisters to the Admiral, everyone in Kure Naval Base!"

Too bad she never specified how long they'll live in the first place... or anything about her own mortality... not to mention that just having the power alone doesn't guarantee anything...

In any case, Kongou has always been on the forefront of battle, so keeping everyone safe by her own hand feels a lot more empowering than relying on some furry white cat-thing to somehow 'MAKE IT SO!' and such. Giving her the means itself would make a lot more sense than just hoping the dice fall in her favor all the time thanks to a shady backroom soul-sucking (literally) deal. From what I'm reading, this would be a selfish active wish (since she is focusing on her own strength, and she is placing the onus onto herself to carry out this wish), so she would have heightened combat-related skills.

Power: The ability to communicate telepathically and receive other's thoughts if they send it over to her, and she can do this over any distance unless she is unconscious (or there's some kind of mental barrier). Since a naval base is something of a command station and the Admiral is supposed to be the one in charge of communications, Kongou being able to communicate telepathically is basically her acting like a radio tower, except instead for a navy, she's the radio tower for Magis now... kinda.

As for magical power, she would have energy wave emission. Basically, she can conjure a wave of energy that has the physical power to blast away any threats near her (but will also blast away friends, oops). It's basically like summoning the biggest goddamn gust of wind you've ever felt and slamming it against everything around you, repelling everything. Also, she can control when the blast will begin-- basically, she can allow the blast to have a big center radius so her friends can huddle around her and be unaffected. This ties into the idea of protection (literally blasting away danger, like with a cannon, but instead it's magic).

Weapon: Machine guns, which can be mounted onto her arms.
